Love Tokens, Hand Engraving & Typofilia

I first discovered antique Love Token silver disc necklaces at an antiques and collectors’ fair, and I was instantly drawn to them. Their beauty lay in their simplicity — small silver discs, hand engraved with a loved one’s name or a message like “Forget Me Not.” They felt intimate, meaningful, and incredibly wearable.

I’ve always admired the Victorians for their vision. They made things with care and intention, not just for themselves, but for generations to come — from beautifully crafted everyday objects to jewellery rich with detail and sentiment. Every Victorian jewel I’ve encountered feels as though it truly mattered to its owner, and that sense of meaning is something I’m endlessly inspired by.

These Love Tokens became the starting point for the engraved disc pendants I make today. Simple circles of gold, hand engraved with names, initials, dates, or illustrations, each one becoming personal the moment it’s commissioned.

I choose hand engraving exclusively, in the same spirit as the Victorians — important things deserve to be done properly. The engraver I work with has spent years mastering this skill, and it’s something that simply can’t be replicated by machine. Each piece is subtly unique, with its own character and warmth.

Hand engraving also allows us to explore different fonts and styles. While classic scripts like Edwardian and Times Roman will always have my heart, I love introducing unexpected typefaces that give these timeless pieces a fresh point of view.

A simple gold engraved pendant is one of the easiest necklaces to wear. Beautiful on its own, it becomes even more meaningful when layered — telling a story that’s entirely your own. There are so many amazing fonts and typefaces out there, with hand engraving, they can be carved into the gold to create a gorgeous union of craft and design. TLDR: My gold disc engraveables were inspired by Victorian Love Tokens, hand engraved and truly sentimental. I strive to make such special things, and love to create them with a modern point of view whilst retaining the craft and quality of materials.
