The Modern Heirloom Journal

How to Choose a Personalised Piece of Jewellery: Jewellery should hold more than beauty — it should hold memory. Each engraved piece becomes a quiet archive of a moment, a name, a promise, or a turning point.

This journal is designed to help you choose words worth wearing — now and for decades to come.

What Makes a Modern Heirloom?

A modern heirloom is not defined by age. It is defined by meaning. The Victorians were the best at creating it, their jewellery was rarely loud, It was intimate. Lockets held hair, rings carried inscriptions. Pieces were worn close to the skin — carrying private sentiment in plain sight. A modern heirloom does the same.

It marks a moment: A name, a date, words that steady you. A memory you refuse to forget. The gold may be new — but the intention is timeless.

Solid gold vs plated — why permanence matters

Gold has always symbolised endurance. It doesn't rust or fade, but softens gently with wear, becoming more itself over time.

Victorian pieces were created with the understanding that jewellery would outlive its first owner.

When you choose solid gold, you are choosing longevity — not trend. A piece that can be worn daily and gather memories; to one day be borrowed, inherited and rediscovered.

Given with Intention

The most meaningful gifts are often those given with intention and thought. A personalised engraving says:

I thought about you and I chose this carefully. I want this to belong only to you.

Most treasured pieces are gifted not because they are extravagant, but because they are intentional.

Why engraving transforms jewellery into something deeply personal

Hand Engraving is a craft that takes great skill, each piece will be different as it is touched by human hand, it is an art in itself.

The words, or pictures cut into the gold, are for the wearer first— and the world second. Some choose initials to represent that special someone, some choose coordinates or a date — a place that altered everything. Some choose a word that anchors them: Trust, Love, Enough..

When choosing your engraving, ask yourself: What or who would I want to remember in ten years?

What to Engrave?

Choose something that represents a special person, date, or memory that holds deep meaning. It doesn't have to be serious, but intentional design always wins..

A Classic

A Simple Initial, with a Date on the Back. This is minimalist, with a nod to Victorian design. Timeless and easy to wear every day - Perfect!

Font & Layout

As well as the sentiment, the choice of font can truly reflect your personality & style. All our engraving is done by hand, making it easier to create custom layouts, using interesting or classic fonts.

It could be a simple initial or a more complex design incorporating various elements. The traditional 'Engravers Stylecard' is a great place to start, just think of what you want to incorporate first, and then what style of font you are drawn to, this usually informs the layout as some fonts flow and some are more rigid. Either way, we will always help and guide you to get the best result.
